Learning English & Math Placement

Math Placement Testing

St. Mary’s School requires all new students to take a Math Placement Test prior to enrollment. Placement tests are also mandatory for students who wish to challenge their current math placement and enroll in a higher-level course.

In addition, students who complete a mathematics course outside of St. Mary's, including courses taken through accredited schools, online programs, colleges, or other educational institutions, must take a placement test before receiving approval to advance to the next course level. This ensures that students have mastered the necessary skills and concepts to be successful in subsequent coursework.

The Math Department will make placement decisions based on placement test results, prior academic performance, and teacher recommendations. The decisions are final.

ESL Program

After arriving in August, students take an English language proficiency test and are assigned to appropriate ESL classes based on their English proficiency. Our goal is to support each student while they work to improve their English skills.
St. Mary's School prepares students to succeed in their academic coursework and earn good scores on the SAT and TOEFL. We pay particular attention to developing essays, reading critically, discussing class topics, and giving oral presentations.

The Use of Translators for Assessments, Essays, and Tests
International students’ academic success is closely tied to the development of strong English-language skills. St. Mary’s recognizes that translation tools may occasionally be helpful for improving comprehension and understanding course materials. However, unless otherwise specified by the classroom teacher, all assignments and assessments must be completed and written in English without the use of translators or AI-based translation tools.
